Only 50% of toenail issues are caused by a fungal infection
Thickened, discoloured (generally yellow-brown), brittle toenails can result from a number of causes, not all of them caused by fungal infection. In fact, only around half of toenail issues are due to nail fungus. It's always advisable to seek an accurate diagnosis of any toenail condition from a healthcare professional. Unnecessary use of antifungals where there is no fungal infection should always be avoided. These products are also harsh on the nail and surrounding skin because their formulations are based on volatile organic compounds (required to keep antifungals in liquid form). Even if a fungal infection is confirmed and antifungal remedies or treatments are used, the condition of the nail itself shouldn't be ignored.
Nail fungus will 'eat' the keratin which the nail is made up of, leading to discolouration and overly thick, brittle, damaged, often uncomfortable or even painful nails. There are, however, many other causes of toenail damage that result in the same or similar symptoms as a fungal nail infection. Lifestyle, other health conditions, age and genetics can all lead to toenail damage or 'dystrophy' even where there is no infection present. Onychauxis is a common condition where the toenails are yellow and thick simply because of genetics. Brittle nail syndrome can also lead to damaged toenails which are prone to splitting and breaking. Lichen planus and psoriasis are amongst the inflammatory conditions which result in damaged toenails with poor texture and structure. Sports-related nail trauma and even wearing ill-fitting footwear can lead to toenail damage, as can trauma from salon procedures including aggressive toenail filing, gel nails and acrylics.
